The Scrapbook Calender Quilter – Ann Dudek

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

By day, she is a mild mannered accountant. But by night, she is The Scrapbook Calendar Quilter!!! Of whom do we speak? We speak of the amazing, multi-talented Ann Dudek!

Ann Dudek

Ann Dudek

We feel qualified here at Betty’s Quilting etc. to call Ann “amazing and multi-talented” and to call her new book, The Scrapbook Calendar Quilt© a must-have. You see, Ann is one of us, an employee! You know that door in the classroom that leads over to the office area?  That is where Ann is (of course when she is NOT shopping at Betty’s during her lunch hour).

The Scrapbook Calendar Quilt

The Scrapbook Calendar Quilt

The majority of the Betty’s Quilting etc. / QuiltWoman.com employees are quilters (yours truly included) and those that aren’t, are soon converted. So when Ann came into our office one day with her Scrapbook Quilt© to show off, a new publication was born.

The book teaches its lucky owner how to create a quilt that reflects a year’s worth of memories. Consisting of 12 months in the form of blocks with each day getting it’s own square, it’s as much fun to make as it is to look at. A square can be embellished to represent the significance of that particular day. No two quilts created from this unique concept will ever the same.

Mach - In like a lion, out like a lamb

March - In like a lion, out like a lamb

This book would be great for teaching a Block of the Month. Start a class in January with the January block and move on from there. Collecting fabrics for this quilt would be a great excuse to go on a shop hop (like the one Betty’s is part of April 29 – May 1)!

The book is 72 pages and is fully illustrated in color with high quality photos of each block. It is spiral bound so it will lay flat as you use it. As a bonus, there are also instructions for making a Baby’s Charm Quilt!

Spiral bound and full of color photos!

One of my favorite aspects of the book (besides the how-to-do-it portion) is Ann’s sense of humor. We’ll just call it quirky. I’ll use the discussion about the July block as an example. To quote Ann, “July is my birthday month. I am one of these people who think their birthday should be a national holiday. So of course I had to put in a special fabric!” I had the pleasure of proofreading the book before publication and was laughing the whole time! This is not your ordinary, dry, how-to book. When I make one of these quilts, I think I WILL put in Ann’s birthday as a special date!

The book is available in the store now. You can even ask to have Ann autograph it for you!

Ann will also be attending the Spring International Quilt Market in Minneapolis, May 21 – 23. She will be at the QuiltWoman.com booth (where else would she be???). She’ll be having a book signing and will be sure to regale the attendees with tales of all of her blocks and special days.

So Ann, from the rest of us at the Betty’s Quilting etc. & QuiltWoman.com family, congratulations on your new book. You gave birth to it, and we’d like to think we were the labor coaches cheering you on!

Once Upon a Time Fairy Tale Puzzle Quilts by Beth Helfter

Once Upon a Time- Fairy Tale Puzzle Quilts

Once Upon a Time- Fairy Tale Puzzle Quilts

Introducing another amazing title: Once Upon a Time- Fairy Tale Puzzle Quilts. This unique book is the creation of Beth Helfter of EvaPaige Quilt Designs and is published by QuiltWoman.com.  The concept is quite brilliant. This is not a book of patterns, patterns, patterns, but rather a book that teaches you the concept behind designing your own quilt based on puzzle-like blocks. The theme, of course, is fairy tales- a broad theme for any girl. Not only does the book give you the concept, but it also does give you all the pattern elements for you to incorporate into the princess themed design. You will have to flip through this title yourself to see how practical and innovative it truly is.

About the author: EvaPaige Quilt Designs, begun in 2005 by quilt designer Beth Helfter, is dedicated to creating uniquely casual new patterns for the contemporary quilter. Featuring lots of innovative fabric slicing, exciting piecing techniques, and vibrant colors, the patterns strive to place fun before fuss when it comes to quilt-making. Although certainly there is a time and place for such things, Beth has always preferred not to stress over perfect points and matching seams, believing that if she isn’t totally perfect, why should her quilts be? Therefore, the overwhelming emphasis of her patterns is on enjoying the process of quilting and simply creating something fun and beautiful. Quilters of all levels are invited to grab a pile of fabric and just start playing and creating!

Sizzling Circles is here!

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

We have a new book on the shelf.  Just saying “new book” sells it short, it’s really a new book with a new technique. Published  by QuiltWoman.com, it’s called Sizzling Circles by Lacey J. Hill. I became a fan of Lacey the minute I read this in her bio, “She swears her stash reproduces at will and claims it requires its own zip code!” That is a woman after my own heart.

So what’s this HOT new book about? It’s all about making quilts, table toppers, wall hangings, totes, etc. from quilted circles. Take a look….

Do you see what I’m talking about? Circles!

Bye Bye Bias

Now in the past, working with circles has always involved having to deal with bias edges. And we all know what a stretched-out mess that can be. But with the method developed by Lacey, you don’t have to deal with messy edges. As an added bonus, her method also means no binding is required. Outstanding!

Easy to quilt too

Lacey’s unique patterns also involve a “Quilt-As-You-Go” technique. That is particularly appealing…especially for those of us who don’t have long arms and need/want to do a bigger project. No longer do you have to fit all that bulk under the arm of your machine to get the project quilted. Sign ME up!

Fabrics gone wild!

You can go wild with your fabric choices for the quilts and other projects. They work especially well with large scale print fabrics combined with a small-scale print. Take a look at this table runner made from Mark Lipinski’s califon fabric.

Perfect for Appliqué

A lot of Lacey’s projects feature appliqué. Knowing that everyone has their favorite appliqué technique, instructions for both Machine and Hand Appliqué are included. I absolutely fell in love with this piece, Sizzling Circle Papaya.

As far as the quilts in the book (don’t forget the book has more than quilts), instructions are for three sizes (baby, lap, wall). But once you learn the technique, the size of your project is limited only by your imagination.

The book is available now at Betty’s Quilting Etc. or through  QuiltWoman.com Get yours now and start digging through your stash! To quote Lacey again, “Let’s be honest, it really is…All About The Fabric!

Do a “Moon Dance” in your sewing room!

Friday, April 10th, 2009

Betty’s is proud to carry QuiltWoman.com’s newest book, Moon Dance, written by Cary Flanagan.

This book’s inspiration was Cary’s Moon Glow pattern. Moon Glow was created out of a desire to showcase large scale fabrics that one couldn’t bear to cut up. The pattern proved to be very popular, and as a result, Cary started playing the “What If Game.” What if this was changed or that was changed? And thus the book Moon Dance was born.

The book contains twelve innovative and exciting quilt designs that evolved from the the concepts Moon Glow was created from. These designs include 11 quilts tops (including the original Moon Glow that started it all, plus a design that can be used for a bag front or a pillow top.

When I initially picked up the book, my first question was “How does Cary do those blocks with the semi circles, the moon blocks?” Cary says “The method I present is meant for quilters who are not very experienced in sewing curves( a method that required lots of pinning). ” Phew, I’m covered!

Instructions are important in any how-to book. And the instructions in Moon Dance are more than complete. They are clear and concise, and come with loads of details and assembly diagrams (always a big hit with me).

The book’s 91 pages contain not only directions for all twelve designs, but also contains hints, tricks and tips. For example, Cary provides instructions on making a design wall, fabric selections, teacher tips and more . Also included are a gallery of quilts made using her designs. These will send you to the moon (pun intended).

So if you are a confident beginner or better, this book could provide you with your next project. Dig through your stash for that great looking fabric you have been hoarding because you couldn’t stand to cut it up. Now’s the time to do something with it! You can buy this terriffic book now at Betty’s.  Stop in and check it out.
